Study Lecturer Program: Islamic History and Civilization Students Learn Historical Research Practices with a Guest Lecturer from UIN Sunan Kalijaga

South Tangerang, FAH Online News – The Faculty of Adab and Humanities (FAH), UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta, welcomed a guest lecturer from UIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta, Dr. Fatiyah, S.Hum., M.A., on Tuesday (November 3, 2026). On this occasion, Dr. Fatiyah delivered a lecture on Historical Research Methods to third-semester students of the Islamic History and Civilization Study Program (SPI). The activity served as an opportunity to exchange academic experiences while introducing students to the practical aspects of historical research.

During the lecture, Dr. Fatiyah not only presented materials related to historical research methods but also shared her experiences throughout the research process, from identifying research topics or issues and developing assumptions to selecting appropriate research approaches. One of the research experiences she shared was her study of a poor fishing village in Demak.

Drawing on her personal research experience, students were encouraged to understand that the theories they learn should not remain merely conceptual but must also be applied directly in the research process. She also emphasized the importance of adapting theories and approaches to the specific conditions of the research object to ensure a more comprehensive understanding. In addition to discussing research experiences, the lecture provided an opportunity to exchange perspectives on academic life in Yogyakarta and Jakarta. The learning session was conducted interactively through discussions and question-and-answer sessions between the guest lecturer and students. Students' enthusiasm was evident in the various questions they raised throughout the activity.

In a brief interview, Dr. Fatiyah explained that she had begun preparing for the lecture several weeks in advance, both in terms of the materials and her mental readiness. She also discussed the differences between the Islamic Cultural History Study Program at UIN Sunan Kalijaga and the Islamic History and Civilization Study Program at UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta. According to her, the distinction primarily lies in the terminology used. Literally, the term culture refers to a more specific scope of study, whereas civilization encompasses a broader range of subjects. These differences are also reflected in the curricula of the respective study programs. For example, UIN Sunan Kalijaga offers a Museology course, which focuses on the care and preservation of cultural heritage sites.

Dr. Fatiyah further emphasized the importance of direct experience in the learning process. In her view, students should be encouraged to observe and practice firsthand what they have previously learned through theoretical instruction. One approach that can be implemented is to bring students closer to their research subjects through activities such as neighborhood exploration or community-based field visits. Learning materials should also be continuously updated and adapted to developments and actual conditions in the field.

During her visit to FAH, Dr. Fatiyah expressed her appreciation for the warm welcome she received. She particularly appreciated the friendly and family-oriented atmosphere, the hospitality of the study program representatives, and the students' helpful attitudes and attentiveness throughout the learning session. In addition to sharing her impressions, she encouraged students to remain diligent in their studies and always show respect for their lecturers. According to her, one thing lecturers will always remember about their students is the respect and appreciation they receive from them.

Through this activity, students are expected to gain new perspectives on historical research practices while experiencing a different teaching and learning environment. Academic encounters between universities such as this also provide valuable opportunities to broaden students' horizons and enrich their learning experiences within the Faculty of Adab and Humanities.
