Cultural Tuesday Program at the Faculty of Adab and Humaniora UIN Jakarta

In the midst of the increasingly rapid flow of globalization, efforts to preserve and strengthen national identity have become a necessity. The Faculty of Adab and Humanities (FAH) of the State Islamic University (UIN) Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta has taken concrete steps to realize this ideal through a mandatory dress code initiative entitled "Cultural Tuesday". This program specifically appeals to all academicians, from faculty leaders, educators, education staff, to students, to wear traditional clothing in the form of a white kurung shirt and batik skirt (for female students and workers) or a white shirt and batik sarong (for male students and workers) every Tuesday. This appeal is stated in the official circular of the faculty, not just a mere formality. Moreover, "Cultural Tuesday" is a manifestation of the commitment of the FAH UIN Jakarta to instill a sense of love and pride in the nation's cultural heritage, especially in the context of using local products. The choice of the white kurung shirt and batik is not without reason. The white baju kurung, with its simple yet elegant design, symbolizes politeness and neatness, noble values that are upheld in Malay tradition and also in academic ethics. Meanwhile, batik, as an intangible cultural heritage that has been recognized by UNESCO, is a representation of the richness of art and philosophy that is engraved in each of its motifs. The use of batik not only shows visual beauty, but also contains deep meanings about history, nature, and local wisdom.

For women in the FAH environment, the combination of the white baju kurung and batik skirt is a symbol of cultured beauty. This combination not only meets the standards of decency and propriety in an academic environment, but also radiates self-identity as Indonesian women who respect tradition. Likewise for men, wearing a white shirt combined with a batik sarong gives a formal impression but remains close to cultural roots. Batik sarongs, with their various patterns and manufacturing techniques, are a representation of the skills and creativity of local craftsmen that deserve to be appreciated.
More than just a recommendation to dress, the "Cultural Tuesday" program has a more fundamental goal, namely to foster a love for local products starting from the things closest to everyday life, namely clothing. In the era of global consumerism, imported products often dominate the market, including in the fashion industry. This initiative is an oasis that reminds us of the quality and uniqueness of domestic products. By wearing batik and other traditional clothing, FAH academics indirectly support the sustainability of the local creative industry, empower craftsmen, and preserve batik techniques and motifs that have been passed down from generation to generation.

The steps taken by FAH UIN Jakarta should be appreciated as a breakthrough in instilling national values through a personal and applicable approach. Clothing is not just a body covering, but also a medium for self-expression and collective identity. Through "Cultural Tuesday", FAH UIN Jakarta invites all its members to make clothing part of a conscious effort to love and preserve local products. This simple action is expected to foster greater awareness of the importance of supporting the nation's economy and appreciating the work of the nation's children. In addition, this program also has an educational dimension. By wearing batik, students, especially those studying the humanities and culture, will be more exposed and interested in exploring more deeply about the richness of Indonesian culture. They will learn about various types of batik from various regions, understand the philosophical meaning behind each motif, and appreciate the creative process involved in making it. The direct experience of wearing batik is expected to foster a deeper appreciation of the nation's cultural heritage and encourage them to become agents of preservation in the future. The "Cultural Tuesday" initiative at FAH UIN Jakarta is an inspiring example for other educational institutions in an effort to instill a sense of love for the homeland and support for local products. Simple steps in dressing have a significant impact on strengthening national identity and encouraging sustainable economic growth. Hopefully, the spirit of "Cultural Tuesday" can continue to burn and inspire more people to participate in preserving the richness of Indonesian culture through real actions in everyday life. By prioritizing local products, we not only appreciate the heritage of our ancestors, but also contribute to the progress of the nation in the future.
